Lockhart Smokehouse

No forks. No sauce. No shortcuts.

Lockhart Smokehouse branding iron heated in glowing coals

The mission: transporting the hallowed, post-oak traditions of Lockhart to a new generation of Texas BBQ purists.

The Challenge

Lockhart, Texas, is the undisputed "Mali of BBQ," where the dry-rub style and brick-pit methods are protected like sacred texts. When bringing this experience to Dallas, the challenge was to create a brand that felt like a "direct descendant" of those legendary pits, rather than a polished imitation. The identity had to signal to true BBQ aficionados that the rules hadn't changed: the meat is the star, and the branding is the seal of authenticity.

The Approach

We centered the brand on the "Central Texas Market" philosophy, where quality is measured by the smoke ring and the crust, not the decor. The visual strategy was designed to feel Proletarian yet Elite.

  • The Lineage of Smoke: We leveraged the iconic Lockhart name to establish immediate, unassailable authority in the competitive Texas market.
  • Industrial Utility: The design language uses "Dieselpunk" and "Proletarian" influences, utilizing heavy-duty typography and "Blacksmith" inspired aesthetics that feel forged in the heat of a 24-hour pit.
  • Unapologetic Branding: We embraced a "Bold and Gritty" look, using a palette of soot-black and rusted-copper to mirror the physical environment of a working smokehouse.
The Solution

I developed a comprehensive identity system that functions as a "Light in the Darkness" for those seeking a real-deal BBQ haven.

  • Iconic Symbolism: Developed high-contrast logos and "Metal Badge" signage that suggest a "Heroic and Dangerous" commitment to the craft.
  • Physical Touchpoints: From custom-printed butcher paper and retail rub packaging to rugged apparel, every asset was designed to feel like a piece of the smokehouse itself.
  • Mobile Command: Designed high-impact vehicle wraps and trade show graphics that broadcast the "Lockhart" standard across the region.
The Results
  • Instant Institution: Helped Lockhart Smokehouse bypass the "new kid" phase and immediately take its place as one of the most sought-after BBQ joints in Dallas.
  • Cultural Dominance: Created a visual language of "Mud, Sweat, and Brisket" that resonates deeply with the class and culture of Texas BBQ.
  • Strategic Expansion: Provided a "Solid yet Evolving" framework that has allowed the brand to successfully scale across three high-traffic locations.
